These include the recruitment of a multidisciplinary team through various strategic appointments, the definition of a comprehensive plan to coordinate the project’s development, and progress in fundamental areas such as governance, communication and dissemination, training, and the definition of priority use cases.

Progress achieved

Operational technology infrastructure

The Regional Ministry of Digitalisation has established an environment based on the Cloudera Data Platform, expanded with cloud licences for data governance and 360-degree lineage, as well as tools from John Snow Labs for anonymisation, clinical entity detection and coding to standard terminologies, enabling the transformation of free-form clinical text into structured data that can be reused for research and innovation.

Governance model under development

Progress has been made in designing an evolutionary governance model that covers access procedures, decision-making bodies, roles, responsibilities and regulatory monitoring mechanisms. The model incorporates the Centre for the Management of Secondary Data Use (CGDII) and has been approved by the Delegated Data Protection Committee.

Four use cases underway

All use cases have now been approved by the relevant Ethics Committees and are making significant progress:

Optimisation of referrals for rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (CEIm Hospital Clínico San Carlos): initial planning has been completed, annotation guidelines drawn up, clinical entity recognition models trained, and data from four university hospitals and primary care harmonised.

Care pathways for long-term breast cancer survivors – SURBCAN-Madrid cohort (CEIm Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre): the development plan has been defined for a cohort of women diagnosed between 2000 and 2006 with follow-up until 2022; data harmonisation and loading from multiple sources is currently underway.

Unplanned Hospitalisation: risk stratification tool (CEIm 12 de Octubre University Hospital): a validation plan for predictive models has been drawn up, cohorts have been identified from primary and specialist care medical records, and ETL processes have been designed to produce standardised data models.

Protective effect of statins in primary cardiovascular prevention in people over 75 years of age (CEIm Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid): the methodological definition has been completed, a standardised dictionary of variables has been established, and data extraction and cleansing have begun using structured ETL flows.

Team, resources and financial implementation

The project integrates information sources from hospital services, primary care and pharmacies, involving more than 55 professionals and 20 specific recruitment positions filled during 2025. The budget for the first year has exceeded one million euros, including expenditure on staff, technological infrastructure, specialist services and activities supporting the deployment of the data space.

Communication and dissemination

During 2025, the project maintained an active presence on web channels and social media, as well as participating in national and international scientific and professional forums, including the 41st Congress of the Spanish Society for Healthcare Quality, Science Week 2025 and the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN).

The team also took part in European conferences linked to the EU4Health programme and the European data space ecosystem, strengthening the project’s position in strategic initiatives related to the future European Health Data Space (EHDS).

In September 2025, HealthData@MAD-R&I® was awarded the ENNOVA Prize in the Digital Transformation category, highlighting its contribution to innovation and sustainability in the healthcare system.

A project aligned with Europe and with growth potential

The progress made positions HealthData@MAD-R&I® as a pioneering initiative in Spain in the field of health data spaces, aligned with the future European Health Data Space (EHDS) and with the National Health System’s Digital Health Strategy.

Furthermore, the project continues to strengthen its scalability and sustainability by expanding collaboration networks and generating synergies with other platforms and institutions. Among these, the collaboration initiated with the Niño Jesús University Children’s Hospital stands out, aimed at exploring new use cases in the paediatric population.

HealthData@MAD-R&I® represents a decisive step towards a data-driven healthcare model that is more efficient, innovative and focused on improving public health. In its next phase, the project will focus on consolidating the technological platform, expanding the volume and diversity of available data, and validating use cases in real-world settings, thereby strengthening its scalability and long-term sustainability.

Mónica Luque Rodriguez is a Management and Communications Officer for the HealthData@MAD-R&I® project

The opinions expressed in this article are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the position of the HealthData@MAD-R&I® project, nor that of its participating or funding organisations.

The HealthData@MAD-R&I® project, led by the Directorate-General for Research and Teaching together with the Directorate-General for Digital Health and the Foundation for Primary Care Bio-Health Research and Innovation of the Community of Madrid (FIIBAP), with the participation of Primary Care and…

[1
118
post-25061","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sin-categoria","tag-heathdatamad-ri-en
["GET
